The way I understand it, you use a straight edge to draw an imaginary line across the base, from the low edge of the front of the horn to the low edge of the back of the horn. Then you begin your length measurement at this line, in the center of the side of the horn, and follow the outside curve of the horn to the tip. Something like this:

A pronghorn with heavy 14-inch horns and four-inch prongs will score about 70 points and is a trophy no one need be ashamed of. If, however, a trophy qualifying for the current B&C all-time records minimum of 82 is the hunter's goal, a buck with 15 to 16 inch horns, 6 to 7 inch bases, and 5 to 6 inch prongs must be found.

Circumference is difficult to judge, even for veteran antelope hunters. Complicating things, some animals have partially flattened bases, making them score lower than antelope with more rounded bases.

When field judging a pronghorn antelope buck in the field, mass and prong length are as important as horn length can be. (Photo courtesy of the Holder family) The end result? The score on young Warren Holder's buck - he was 14 at the time - was a very good 75 inches, well above the Pope & Young Club's minimum entry mark of 67 inches.

In my experience, the most straightforward way for a buck antelope to reach and exceed the 80" barrier is to be both heavy (top and bottom), and longer than 16". These two criteria alone will generally put a buck into the 80" and better range. As long as his prongs are at least decent, this buck should score well.

Most hunters ONLY judge pronghorn antelope by horn length. This is a mistake, though, because length is only part of what makes an antelope score. Use the eyes to judge mass and length of prong. If the base of the horn from the side is twice as wide as the eyes, which are about 2 inches across, that's a good start.

Always reference the width of the eye when determining a buck's mass from the side. If the buck's bases look wider than the eye, the buck has good mass. Using the 4×7 rule (7" bases, 7" D2 measurements, 7" prongs and 7" total D3 and D4 measurements) can greatly increase your antelope scoring abilities.

I think you hit the nail on the head there. Killing a pronghorn is about as difficult as brushing your teeth (at least on a rifle hunt in an average unit) so the challenge and excitement is finding one and judging it correctly to be high scoring. Otherwise, there isn't much of a story to go along with most antelope hunts.

Because such a large percentage of score is drawn from mass measurements, heavy horns are critical to "making book." Four circumferences are measured. Take the first measurement right at the base, then divide the horn into quarters and measure the circumference at the dividing lines. Mass is best judged from the side.
